Occlusal Equilibration:

Occlusal Equilibration (Adjustment)

- Occlusal equilibration (adjustment) is a procedure where teeth are selectively ground, in very tiny amounts, on the chewing/biting surfaces to establish the BEST "bite" between the top and bottom teeth so that maximal health and stability is established for the teeth, gums (gingiva), supporting bone of the teeth, all supporting muscles and the jaw joints (temperomandibular joints (TMJ's)). Sometimes, the equilibration necessary can involve the entire mouth or only part of the mouth.

- There is a long list of indications for occlusal equilibration, but some of the more common indications are:

1. Grinding (bruxing) of the teeth

2. Stabilization of teeth with gum (periodontal) disease

3. Stabilization of orthodontic results

4. Jaw joint (TMJ) problems
